Racin' the Station Duathlon

Racin' the Station Duathlon
Saturday, September 28, 2013 8:30 AM

Join Team Rocket Tri Club for the 2nd "Racin' the Station" Duathlon!

"Racin' the Station" Duathlon is non-sanctioned USAT Run/Bike/Run event where the participants will "race" the International Space Station (ISS) as it completes one Earth orbit. The ISS completes an orbit every 91 minutes 12 seconds. We will track the starting location of the ISS at the race start time and see who "beats" the space station by completing the event by the 91 minute 12 second mark.

The event will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), which is on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. The race will begin at 8:30 am.

This year we've added a "Youth long" and a "Youth short" course!

Race Distance

The distances are in three "translations":
Run pi (km) / Bike e^pi (km) / Run pi (km)
Run 3.14 km / Bike 23 km / Run 3.14 km
Run 1.95 miles / Bike 14.3 miles / Run 1.95 miles

The run course is very flat (same for both legs) and the bike course has a few small hills, but is overall very flat as well.

Youth Courses

For the youth, the normal duathlon order of Run-Bike-Run is reversed, or called an "anti-duathlon", if you will.  Similar to matter and anti-matter having opposite charges ("Dork!" as my wife would say to me).  Anywho... the youth will be BIKE-RUN-BIKE.  (the youth event is cheaper than main event)

Starting AFTER the main event (around 10:45-11:00), the youth portions will begin together.

The long and short will be on the course together, but "long course" will start first followed by "short course"... they will all start 2 or 3 at a time to reduce chaos and improve safety (no worries about timing... they will be chip timed!)

For the Youth Courses, pick based off ability, but possible age groups are in parenthesis below:

Youth short (6-8):  BIKE 2 miles - RUN 0.5 miles - BIKE - 2 miles

Youth long (9-13):  BIKE 4 miles - RUN 1 mile - BIKE - 4 miles
